Introduction to Music
The Introduction to Music Program is a group class for children 5 to 8. This class is designed for children who are not yet ready to enter into private instrumental instruction. These classes are 45 minutes once or twice a week.
These classes will involve:
- Rhythm development
- Coordination and concentration development
- Ear training
- The value of notes
- Notation
- Dynamics
- Learning to listen
- Making music
- Recognition of orchestra instruments
- Music history
Here is a small excerpt of what they learn about each fundamental:
Rhythm development coordination and concentration:
Children are taught rhythm, coordination, and concentration through various methods including Orff based principals. Our activities involve developing an awareness of rhythm through movement games and singing games. The use of many percussion instruments such as drums, shakers, rhythm sticks, triangles etc.
Ear training:
Children will be taught a lot of songs through proper vocal training.
Value of notes:
Children will be taught to recognize whole, half and quarter notes through movement, singing, and writing.
Notation:
Children will recognize musical symbols such as (staff, treble clef, time signature, bar line, musical alphabet, elementary note reading, etc.)
Dynamics:
Major dynamics terms ( forte-loud, piano-soft, etc.)
Learning to listen:
Children will listen to live instruments, different styles of music on CD'S, and watch musical videos
Making music:
Children will be in the orchestra using many types of percussion instruments metalaphone, xylophone, drums, shakers, rhythm sicks, triangles, etc.
Instrument Recognition:
Children are taught to recognize the various instruments in the orchestra, both by sound and sight.
Music history:
Lives of the most famous composers. Listening and recognizing their music.
